Great day out, shit game but got the win. Atmosphere was nothing like loads of games over the years, Everton 91 springs to mind, and yes I know BFS wasn't involved but Ipswich play off semi at home in 04 was the best atmos at an all seater that I can remember at home

Re: Fat Sam Play Off Final
Matty Taylor at left back...

Decent player on the wing or even in the middle at a push (do I recall an article, maybe after the Chelsea '19th century football' game, where BFS was praising how much he ran compared to other players, without any consideration of what he did with the ball when he got it?) and a trier but the equivalent of putting Snodgrass at right back because he'll do a job. For all the understandable reservations I would take either Cresswell or Masuaku over him there any day. Turned inside out for their goal (Matt Phillips? Probably. What happened to him?) and McCartney came on soon after.

Even so, I'm not sure I can buy into this idea that a direct comparison is a favourable thing just because Haller is better than Cole and any of our current right backs are better than Demel (fuck me I'd forgotten him, foul throw specialist) and so on.

Then we were a team relegated the previous season, albeit one of the bigger names down there (and we nearly didn't fulfil that expectation to be promoted). Now we have been back in the top division for seven seasons, and moved stadiums on the promise of greater income, profile, and so on. I'm no BFS apologist, far from it, but the club as it was then is in no way comparable to that now. Nor should be our expectations.

Re: Fat Sam Play Off Final
yeah well he was probably more relieved after spending so much more than our peers and blowing it with home draws. We should have been in the automatic qualifying spot. The way Reading finished was incredible. Still look at them now.

Sam Baldock anyone?

Everytime I look at Vaz Te’s Winner, it amazes me, how close he was to skying that chance !

Villa, Leeds M’borough- they’d all take your arm off if you offered them that! I’m sure you could add a few old first division teams to that list!

Re: Fat Sam Play Off Final
Not sure why people are surprised they didn't sell their allocation.

I can't be bothered to look, but would hazard a guess that the population of Blackpool is a lot smaller than somewhere like even Dagenham and would also have a large percentage of old people and poofs not interested in football.

Not as if they have a catchment area other than their town like we do.

But yeah, cracking day out and I thank Sam for what was a very enjoyable season, but he left at the right time.

Duke - I concur, I mean the achievement of scraping through the play offs and getting totally outplayed by Blackpool in the final with the most expensive squad in the division while playing so much negative football..

Re: Fat Sam Play Off Final
Was at that game in the blackpool end too, saw a huge crowd of people with no colours on near the separation between fans, got to the point where there was that many of us nobody was even pretending they weren't west ham anymor.

Got to halftime and they moved the dividers over so we were all in with the west ham crowd proper then.

I’m surprised Allardyce hasn’t got back into the game somewhere!

If you offered what he did for us in getting us back into the premiership at the first attempt, some big named clubs would take your arm off!
